Challenge
Automation Anywhere’s mission-critical automation services rely on a robust and scalable cloud infrastructure that spans multiple providers and regions. This infrastructure serves as the backbone of its operations, supporting critical workloads for global enterprises. Managing environments across such a distributed, multi-cloud setup required a strategic approach to maintain consistency, ensure efficient updates, and align deployments with business demands.
The team adopted Terraform as the IaC framework of choice and initially relied on manual workflows to build and deploy infrastructure. To improve efficiency and introduce automation, the team implemented Atlantis, a popular open-source tool that automates Terraform workflows through GitOps. Atlantis enabled engineers to execute Terraform plans and applies directly from Git pull requests, bringing structure and self-service capabilities to the workflows.
However, as the infrastructure scaled, Atlantis’s single-threaded design became a bottleneck. "When we needed to roll out even a simple change across dozens of regions, the process became a bottleneck. We couldn’t do it quickly or efficiently at scale," said Raj, Director of Cloud Operations at Automation Anywhere. The platform’s inability to handle parallel deployments slowed operations and created inefficiencies during large-scale rollouts.
At the same time, addressing configuration drift and gaining better visibility into deployments became critical. "We had a lot of drifts, visibility of the drifts was quite challenging across all regions," Raj noted. The team needed a solution that could scale with their operations, provide better monitoring, and streamline workflows to meet growing demands.
Solution
After evaluating several cloud automation and management solutions, Automation Anywhere adopted env0 to improve how deployments and scaling were managed across a distributed multi-cloud infrastructure.
Transitioning from Atlantis was seamless with env0’s support for GitOps workflows and a familiar ‘PR plan and apply’ flow. env0’s unlimited concurrency then resolved the bottleneck of the previous setup, enabling the team to perform parallel deployments across multiple regions. "Previously, deploying changes like a small infra changes fix across all regions took an engineer a full day. With env0, it’s done in a matter of minutes." says Arun Nair, Lead CloudOps Engineer at Automation Anywhere.
With the bottleneck resolved, the team began leveraging other env0 capabilities to optimize their workflows. Drift detection emerged as a critical feature, allowing the team to quickly detect and reconcile discrepancies between the actual and desired state of infrastructure resources. "We’ve been able to not only deploy IaC code at scale but also maintain it and run drift detection on top of it, which gives us the confidence that whatever is running in my public cloud environments exactly matches my source of truth—my main branch and my code," says Arun.
env0’s Workflows added further structure and efficiency to deployment processes. As Raj explains, "With env0, we could start with one region, apply successfully, and then have an automated workflow deploy to the rest of the regions." This capability ensured consistency and control across environments, simplifying complex deployments.
The flexibility of env0 also enables Automation Anywhere to integrate with tools and frameworks such as Terraform, Terragrunt, Kubernetes, and YAML files. "env0 was by far the most flexible tool for our use case," Arun added.
The centralized platform provided the visibility needed to monitor deployments, track changes, and maintain alignment across environments, addressing critical gaps in infrastructure management as operations scaled.
Results
With env0, Automation Anywhere achieved several measurable improvements, including:
- Dramatically faster deployments, cutting effort from days to under an hour by leveraging unlimited concurrency, automated workflows, and enhanced self-service capabilities
- Quick detection and resolution of drift, maintaining infrastructure alignment with desired configurations, and reducing operational risks
- Improved security and compliance, with guardrails that ensured consistency across environments and supported adherence to organizational standard
- Enhanced visibility into infrastructure and provisioning-related metrics, including precise information about cloud usage, deployments, and config changes, all of which enabled fine-tuned controls and informed decision-making
- Streamlined scaling across multiple clouds and regions, supporting global operations
These outcomes enabled Automation Anywhere to scale its infrastructure effectively, ensuring reliability and performance while supporting the demands of a growing global enterprise.
What’s next
In addition to expanding the adoption of env0, Automation Anywhere is planning to use its workflows to integrate orchestrated processes and deliver complete Environment as Code capabilities. "With env0, we’ll soon have a single button click to bring up an entirely new region running our stack in an automated fashion," Raj explained.
This one-click deployment approach will enable the teams to automatically launch fully configured environments across regions, ensuring consistency and operational alignment throughout their infrastructure.
